North West Russia

When it comes to getting back to nature, you can choose from several natural zones such as arctic, snow-laden deserts to millennia old forests in North West Russia. There are also many rivers and lakes - many of which, besides being incredibly beautiful, are used as a source of transportation.

Central Russia

Russia Lakers

The vast lowland plains that dominate the Russian landscape carry some of the world's longest rivers, like the Caspian Sea, Lake Onega, Lake Lena, Lake Brosno, and others. Russia contains an enormous number of lakes. Lake Ladoga in Northern Russia is the largest lake in Europe. Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia is the largest body of fresh water in the world and it is the oldest lake in the world ? an estimated 25 ? 30 million years old. The water Lake Baikal holds makes up 20% of the fresh surface water in the world.

Lake Onega is the second largest lake next to Lake Ladoga in Europe. This lake is so enormous that it has a total of a 1369 islands with that covers a total area of 250 square km and it is fed by 58 rivers.

One of the best-known lakes in Russia, Lake Plescheyevo is located in Yaroslavl Oblast near the town of Pereyaslavl-Zalessky. Formerly a resort for Russian tsars, the lake is now a part of the Plescheyevo National Park. It is about 51 square kilometers in size and measures 25 meters deep in the middle. The water is very shallow for about 200 meters from every shore and the lake is very popular for camping, swimming and fishing. Some people even use it for windsurfing during the summer months.

Situated in the Tver region in Russia, Lake Brosno is a place of mystery and intrigue. From legends of giant snakes or dragons living in the water to underwater volcanoes, stories surrounding the happenings in the Lake abound.
